Anna Kendrick just gave a director a big middle finger for a gross on-set power play she described in a recent interview.
During the latest episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the “Pitch Perfect” star talked about the worst feedback she ever got while making a film, recalling that a filmmaker tried to demean her improv skills in front of a huge cast of extras.
“I remember a director, once, in a room full of 100 extras or something, being like, ‘Hey, on this next one, just try something. Just make something up. Just improv something,’” Kendrick said. “And I did it, and then the director called cut and came over and, once again, in front of 100 extras, was like, ‘Oof, let’s go back to the script!’”
The actor told podcast host Josh Horowitz she felt like the comment was more of a personal dig than real performance notes.
“It really felt like a very specific power move thing to embarrass me, to gain dominance. It was very, very icky,” she said of the director, whom she did not name.
Things turned out in Kendrick’s favor in the end, however.
She told Horowitz, “Then the thing that I improved ended up in the trailer. So fuck you!”
Nowadays, it’s Kendrick who is sitting in the director’s chair.
Her feature-length directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” was released on Netflix earlier this month.
